Blind Minneapolis attorney 2010 thru hike
Mike Hanson, a blind Minneapolis attorney, will begin a solo hike of the entire 2,174 mile Appalachian Trial this March (2010) using just GPS and his white cane to guide him. No guide, no guide dog. 70% of the visually impaired are unemployed. The hike is intended to make a dramatic statement about the competence and independence of the visually impaired and demonstrate the power of adaptive technologies such as GPS to foster that independence. A documentary fill will be produced of this event by award-winning videogpapher Gary L. Steffens of Fresh Images Video Productions. Endorsed by noted polar explorer and global warming activist Will Steger and with significant sponsorship from 12 (as of 1/2/10) outdoors/backpacking equipment producers, we are just a small amount short of our funding goals. Please see our website (www.hansonatcampaign.com) and consider supporting Mike’s hike to change myths about the visually impaired. Thank you!
