Appalachian Trail hiker writes book
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Jeff Alt promises not to be as hungry this time as he was on a previous trip through West Virginia.
It was 1998. Alt was hiking the 2,159-mile Appalachian Trail at the time, and he stopped at a Harpers Ferry buffet to eat. As he walked back from the food line for the umpteenth time, with a hot fudge sundae stacked three times as high as it should have been, he heard a woman exclaim, “That’s it! I’m going to walk that Appalachian Trail so I can eat like that!” Read the rest of this entry »
Review: Just Passin’ Thru by Winton Porter

Just Passin’ Thru: A Vintage Store, the Appalachian Trail, and a Cast of Unforgettable Characters is one of those books you don’t want to set down. I spend hours reading on the internet each week but don’t read many books, but this was a book I knew had to have some great stories. It is full of stories of the characters Winton Porter has met while running the Mountain Crossing store at Walasi-Yi. The back of the book says Winton gave up his 401k and bank account to become a backpack-purging, tent-selling, hostel-running, first-aid-dispensing, lost-kid finding, argument-setting, romance-fixing, chili-making shopkeeper. This is really a funny book with some touching stories too. It would make a great gift for any hiker or anyone who likes great storytelling.
